Just a few steps from Sonoma Plaza, on Broadway, is the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art. The Sonoma Valley Museum of Art is a family-friendly museum that wants to bring art to Sonoma. The museum was started in 1998 by a group of people who believed Sonoma was culturally rich and thought it should have a modern art museum.
The Sonoma Valley Museum of Art is funded by contributions from members and donors as well as by income from a variety of projects.
Art for Everyone
About four or five times a year, the SVMA curator—someone who selects art to tell a story—chooses a theme for the next exhibition. Then the curator looks at the works of artists to see if it relates to the theme and if it does, they put it in the museum. The museum’s current exhibition is Visions of Paradise: Art and the Power of Faith. It is all about how artists envision Heaven and Hell.
Every year, the museum has an exhibition called Art Rewards the Student. This is where 4th and 5th graders from all the elementary schools get to show their art at the museum. The Sonoma Valley High School 11th and 12th graders help them set it up.

Kate Eilertsen, the Executive Director of the museum, wants to say this to Kid Scoop News readers: “Come to the SVMA to experience art first hand. People learn in all different kinds of ways, both physically and mentally. At SVMA, we have an interactive room, where you can make art and get your hands dirty. The museum is for people of all ages, so please come on by!”
