When I was teaching third grade, any book about Amelia Bedelia was a class favorite. There are 41 books in the series and most can be found at the library. Check out a bunch and read aloud. I guarantee you will also laugh out loud.
Amelia Bedelia was first created by a teacher in New York named Peggy Parish. Herman Parish was in the fourth grade when Amelia Bedelia was published.
His Aunt Peggy passed away in 1988. Popular demand for more Amelia Bedelia books led Herman to continue the series about the literal housekeeper.
One of the many funny things the literal-minded Amelia does is to knit little jackets for books. (Get it? Book jackets!) You can imagine what she does when instructed to “dress the turkey” and “dust the furniture.” It’s a fun-filled series that also builds literacy skills for children.
