Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?’”
Each year, Americans across the country answer that question by coming together on the King Holiday to serve their neighbors and communities. This holiday has become a holiday of service. And doing good for others is good for your kids!
The research is clear: raising compassionate, caring kids improves the health of your child, your family and your community. Parents can actually help children build their empathy “muscles” by giving them opportunities to practice caring.
- Take a bag on a walk and pick up trash
- Make cards and send to children in hospital
- Make a no-sew fleece blanket
- Write letters to soldiers
Fun, Service and Bonding
With your child, look through your local newspaper and identify ways people are serving your community. Look for something you and your family could do together. Maybe help out a local food bank, a local pet rescue center, or senior center. You will enjoy the time spent together while making a difference in the lives of others.
