“Extra! Extra!” is more than the traditional call announcing a new issue of a newspaper. It is a chance to celebrate that Kid Scoop News is now providing EXTRA reading fun to children in the Bay Area.
And, YOU are what make this EXTRA READING FUN possible!
Extra! Extra! Read All About our Digital Edition
Our first response was to create a digital edition of Kid Scoop News in both April and May. Our teacher surveys indicate that children with access to Internet-connected devices very much enjoyed Kid Scoop News online. So, we will continue to provide the digital version into the next school year, in addition to providing print copies where we can.
Extra! Extra! Read All About How We Are Filling a Critical Reading Gap
The COVID-19 school closures created problems beyond revamping how kids are taught. For low-income children in particular, it also cut off critical access to free reading resources as school and community libraries were all slammed shut.
So, in June, we partnered with the Redwood Empire Food Bank, numerous Boys and Girls Clubs and school district food service programs to distribute thousands of print copies of the Kid Scoop News Summer Fun Edition—an expanded edition that provided a lot of EXTRA content (equivalent to about 20 books in one delivery!).
What about next school year?
School districts are looking at three options in the Fall and Kid Scoop News is ready to support all of them—see below.
- Schools will open fully. We will deliver print copies to schools as we have in the past.
- There will be a blended system where children do some work through distance learning and some on the school campus. We will deliver print copies to schools as we have in the past.
- All distance learning. We will deliver print copies to schools in partnership with food distribution programs and other social and family services such as youth organizations, La Luz and Community Health Centers.
We will have to wait and see but, in the meanwhile, thank you so much for you support that allows us to continue to provide children something of their own to read, keep and treasure this summer.
