From Admissions to Graduation and Beyond

By Nicole Novi, Guiding Eyes Graduate

FromAdmissions1Retinitis pigmentosa deprived me of my vision. Though a cane allowed for some freedom, I applied to Guiding Eyes for the Blind, determined to become more independent. I met first with the admissions department and was thrilled to be accepted into the program. And then I met Jovan, my loving Labrador retriever.

I have the highest admiration for the training I received at Guiding Eyes. Along with teaching me verbal and hand commands, the instructors emphasized the importance of repetition and praise. The program is precise, detailed oriented, and was specific to my needs which was important to me. It all went to helping me form such a strong bond with Jovan.

FromAdmissions2When I’m at my job, working for an educational publisher, Jovan patiently sits by my side and when we go to the store she guides me there flawlessly, taking me around obstacles. She’s an extremely well trained guide dog. I don’t have to worry about getting somewhere safely and I don’t have to depend on others. I graduated with Jovan last May and it’s comforting to know the staff is available to me at home when I need help or have a question.

Deciding to get a guide dog from Guiding Eyes has been one of the best choices I’ve ever made. From my first contact with the admissions department, to the support that’s available at home, every element of my experience has been wonderful. As an active, visually impaired person, finding a school as remarkable at Guiding Eyes is extremely important. I will definitely go back to them for my future guide dogs. It’s humbling and heartwarming to know I can count on Guiding Eyes for the Blind every step of the way.
