On May 13, 2014, Napa Junction Elementary School students were shouting for science, thanks to an educational initiative by Sonoma Raceway and its partners.
The fourth-graders gathered on the playground cheered on small, gravity-powered cars they had built in class, competing for awards and a chance to race their creations against those of students in other schools.
Recently named a magnet school for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), Napa Junction is one of three schools competing in the Friedman’s STEM Race Car Challenge, which challenges students to develop and construct a car, test the effects of different factors, and race it down a 188-inch sloped track.
