Parents share importance of Kid Scoop News

Last week was amazing for me and Kid Scoop News. Clearly we are filling an important need!

Thanks to our La Luz Leadership Program volunteer, Sonia Diaz, we recently presented information about Kid Scoop News including tips for boosting reading time at home to three different parent meetings for Spanish speaking parents. Below are some of my key takeaways:

  1. Latino parents want to be the best parents they can be as evidenced by these meetings. However, these parents are not clear that “reading for fun” can include sitting in a chair for a period of time and just reading. They need ideas and training on how to make reading “fun time” as opposed to an “assignment.” Looking ahead, Sonia and I will meet with La Luz to find out how we can provide more outreach and training for parents on ways to make reading at home a fun and educational experience for the entire family.
  2. The parents echoed what we have heard from our local principals—please add more content for Spanish speaking parents. In one meeting, two parents who do translating offered to volunteer to help with that. We will meet with them this summer as we plan next year’s editorial schedule.
  3. These 40 or so parents are ready and willing to be champions and help spread the word to other parents. Several said they were going to follow Kid Scoop News on Facebook and post about it in Spanish. This will be a great way to reach parents who are not able to make the parent meetings.

All in all, Sonia Diaz has led an outreach which has served parents by expanding their knowledge of how to read with their children in a variety of fun ways, including how Kid Scoop News provides them with the tool to do just that. Her work this year will form the basis for some new directions in the 2019-20 school year.
