Jason Carter is the Interim Director of Community Engagement for the City of Santa Rosa. He recently visited Mr. Locker’s 3rd graders at Albert F. Biella Elementary School.
Jason knows first-hand the hardships of growing up poor and in a difficult family situation. Today, he is an important government worker. But it took some tough times and hard work to get here. One thing that helped Jason was going to school.
“I felt safe at school,” says Jason. “I wanted to learn as much as possible and try to live a better life.” Jason loved going to school. Now he helps schools help a new generation of children through his work with the City of Santa Rosa.
Q: How do you help our schools become safe?
A: We start with the belief that kids are IMPORTANT and the future of our City. The Violence Prevention Partnership collaborates with many organizations to support families that have children in school. We also support our community’s parents so they are engaged in the lives of their students.
Q: What is the Violence Prevention Partnership?
A: The Partnership is a program that invests in organizations through a City tax measure and State grants with almost one million dollars a year. We also engage with our residents to create healthy and safe neighborhoods.
Q: How did you become a community leader?
A: A lot of hard work, commitment to making change, and developing my leadership skills. Life can be tough at times. What we do when we face tough times can help you become a leader in our community. I could have taken different paths throughout my hardships and through dedication, belief, and staying true, I now get to be part of the most amazing organization and make our community a better place!
Q: What do you do with your team?
A: I provide leadership to my team to make sure everyone is committed to the City’s values and changing the lives of our youth and families.
Q: What happens when kids get in trouble?
A: It depends on what the child did, but part of my job is to make sure that our youth feel heard, respected, and valued.
Q: What happens if students do bad things and the cameras are not on?
A: The cameras are always on, so don’t do anything bad.
Q: How do you get the stuff to help our schools?
A: The City of Santa Rosa’s residents passed a tax measure in 2004 called Measure O, which provides the funding we need to support our schools and organizations.
Q: Why do you like Kid Scoop News?
A: I never got to have something like Kid Scoop News when I was a kid. You are so lucky to get this! I am glad our grant can help give it to you.
Q: Why do kids matter so much in Santa Rosa?
A: You are the most important part of Santa Rosa. Our future depends on all of you and just like our City’s logo, you are all of our roses. The City of Santa Rosa all want you to feel safe, respected, and valued so you can achieve all of your goals!
Special thanks to the City of Santa Rosa for providing Kid Scoop News to Santa Rosa classrooms!
