Butterflies have a very interesting life cycle, and some butterflies must migrate in order to stay alive. The butterfly life cycle has four stages. The butterfly first starts as an egg. Some butterflies lay only one egg at a time, and some lay hundreds of eggs at a time. The egg is usually laid underneath a leaf. The next part to the cycle is it becomes a caterpillar. Then the butterflies go into a cocoon for the third stage, and become a butterfly for their final stage. There are many different kinds of butterflies that live in Sonoma County. Some of the many butterflies that live in Sonoma County are: Swallowtails, Coppers, Sulphurs, Admirals, and Monarchs. The Monarch butterfly cannot be in the cold weather across the United States, so they have to migrate south and west in order to survive.
Butterflies are very pretty to watch in the summer. Butterflies are really exciting because they transform from a caterpillar to a butterfly. They are colorful, and are interesting to learn about. Be on the lookout for butterflies in Sonoma County this spring!
