The Sonoma International Film Festival and the Boys and Girls Club of Sonoma Valley recently offered students a chance to learn how to produce a short video under the instruction of movie-making professionals.

Day 1: Puppets and Planning
On the first day we met at the Boys and Girls Club of Sonoma Valley and everyone introduced themselves and talked about what school they went to and what classes they were missing. Then we all got into one big group and an instructor passed out puppets and taught us how to move the puppets and make it look like they where talking, breathing and walking. This art is called puppeteering.
Next, we went on to learn about the camera and filming. The instructor taught us all the angles and shots there were. After learning all those awesome things we went on a snack break, I looked around the Boys and Girls Club and was amazed to see they had an art room, gym and a huge rock wall. I may think about becoming a member.
When we went back, we practiced more with the puppets and came up with ideas for a PSA (public service announcement). We broke into groups and came up with our own PSA. My group selected a topic that I will not give out—to keep you in suspense until you go to the 2012 Film Festival. We came up with what we had to wear and bring as props for our film. When we finished coming up with who was going to bring what, and all that good stuff, we went back into one group and told our ideas to one another. By then it was time to go home. This was a fun day and I couldn’t wait for Day 2.
Day 2: Action!
On the second day, we thought up some places to shoot our PSA. It took half an hour to shoot our first scene but it was worth it. We all got to work the camera and direct.
When it got close to noon, we had started to get the hang of everything so it went a lot faster. When we finished, we all got our turn to edit. Editing was hard but really fun. When we got to see the final cut, I personally thought it was perfectly great. After that, we came up with another idea but by then it was time to go home once again.
Day 3: It’s a Wrap!
We set up for our last video and recorded some funny stuff. After filming we had to edit and add some things to it. Everyone got to edit and say their opinion about the film.
This camp is very educational and very, very fun. I think anyone can go to this camp and would think it is awesome! I certainly thought it was fun and I hope you like it too. All of the instructors are very educated and nice. They teach you everything you need to know about filming. This camp is really fun and I loved it.
